Karen Weissenborn - Born to Design

What do Holy Crap’s longest hire and most recent hire have in common? They’re mother and daughter – Karen and Erika Weissenborn.

Erika and Karen Weissenborn

Graphic Designer, Karen Weissenborn, has worked with Holy Crap’s co-founders Brian and Corin Mullins since the company’s beginning in 2009. Erika Weissenborn recently joined the company as its Nutritionist.

Brian and Corin approached Karen in 2009 to design a label for Hapi Food, a superfood cereal that they were selling at the Sechelt Farmer’s Market. Soon after Brian and Corin asked Karen’s opinion about changing the cereal’s name to Holy Crap after a customer exclaimed, “Holy Crap, this tastes amazing!”

Karen suggested they label ½ the cereal Hapi Food and ½ Holy Crap for the next week’s Farmer’s Market. They completely sold out of Holy Crap and only sold 2 Hapi Food! The rest is history!

Karen always knew she’d do something artistic for a career. She grew up and trained as a graphic designer in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Falling in love with Vancouver on a visit, Karen relocated from Alberta and established Karen Weissenborn Design.

After visiting friends on the Sunshine Coast in 1990 she decided the Coast was the perfect place to raise her one-year old daughter Erika. Karen continued to service customers in Vancouver as well as gaining new customers on the Coast.

“I experienced the empty-nest syndrome,” explains Karen, “when Erika left the Coast 7 years ago to attend the University of British Columbia. That was my inspiration to open Fresh from the Coast, a specialty gift store offering local arts and crafts in Sechelt where I could be around people in a retail environment and have a base for my graphic design business.”

“I’ve learned so much about the food industry designing labels for Holy Crap cereal says Karen. “It’s fascinating learning about the regulations around health claims, nutritional facts and certifications. It also poses a challenge balancing the required information with design on the labels.”

Karen proudly says, “Erika recently graduated from the University of British Columbia with a B.Sc Food, Nutrition and Health. Through Erika I’m picking up on more details about health and wellness that all help with better understanding the needs of Holy Crap’s customers.

“I’m delighted that Erika is now working with Holy Crap as their Nutritionist, attending trade and consumer shows, answering customers questions from the blog and Facebook page and writing educational articles for the website.”
